Nordic Skiing

Cross country skiing in the Wallowa mountains is done on the trails in the Wallowa wilderness area or at Salt Creek Summit.

Salt Creek Summit is a sno-park 25 miles from Wallowa lake.  There are over 20 miles of cross-county ski trails with seven loops.   The trails range from easy to difficult.    The more difficult trails are steeper and longer.  None of the trails are groomed.   At over 6000' in elevation there is plenty of snow for X-Country Skiing.

Backcountry Skiing in the Wallowa Wilderness area is an alternative to Salt Creek Summit.  The trails that we recommend include the Hurricane trail, the Mcullley trail and the West Fork of the Wallowa River.

Contact Wallowa Mountain Visitors Center  (451-426-5546) or Wallowa Lake Resort (541-432-2391) for more information.    Wallowa Lake Resort can provide maps for these trails.   X-Country skis can be rented at Sport Corral in Joseph (541-432-4363).

Snow Shoe Trips

Snow shoeing can be done on any trail in the Wallowa Wilderness.  Some recommendations include the Chief Joseph Trail, Wallowa River Trails (above the lake), and the Hurricane Creek Trail.    Wallowa Lake Resort provides free loaner snow shoes for its guests.   Relax in our outdoor hot tub after a long day of snow shoeing.

Snowmobiling (Salt Creek Summit)

20 miles from Wallowa Lake is Salt Creek Summit, an area with over 100 miles of groomed snow mobile trails.   In addition, there are large areas of open areas for off-trail fun.  For up to date snowmobile information, please contact the Wallowa Mountain Visitor Center at 541-426-5546.  See Salt Creek Summit Sno-Park Info for more information.

Wallowa Lake Resort can also provide information on snow mobile opportunities.
